China's resistance to India joining Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG)

As U.S and other major countries pushing India to join the membership bid for Nuclear Suppliers Group (a 48-member executive group of major power countries controlling access to sensitive nuclear technology), China leads the opposition to that push and resisting India from joining Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG).

According to sources, other countries resisting membership of India into NSG include Ireland, Turkey, Austria, New Zealand and South Africa.

Also, Mexico's president said in a statement that Mexico supports Indian membership to the NSG however, membership should be granted to all nations under equal conditions and terms.

China showed no signs of supporting India plea to the NSG membership and said that there would be no support for India unless Pakistan also becomes an NSG member.

The adviser to the Pakistan's Prime Minister on foreign affairs, Sartaj Aziz called upon diplomats from many countries including Russia and asked them to support Pakistan's membership bid into 48-member executive Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG).

He told in his address to Senate that:

"Pakistan's efforts towards non-discriminatory approach will pay off". (Times Of India)

The opposition from many countries for India's membership came into existence as India never signed the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) after developing atomic weapons. However India enjoys most of the benefits of the membership because of a 2008 exemption to NSG rules deal between India and U.S granted to support both countries' nuclear cooperation.

Opposing countries argue that granting India a membership would make a decline in efforts to prevent proliferation cause - core cause of Nuclear Suppliers Group.
